Common coldCARL THE COLD

I'm Carl the Cold, some times called Carl the Common Cold, but I can be the most uncommonly, unpleasant thing that happens to most of you in the winter and sometimes other seasons. And I'm not only unpleasant, I'm a repeater. If you have me in once, I'll almost surely visit you again - always without invitation.

Let me explain myself. Basically, I'm an inflammation in the nasal cavities, the throat, and sometimes the nasal sinuses. I pride myself on the obnoxious nature of my symptoms. I will leave you wheezing, sneezing, coughing, and reaching constantly for the Kleenex. My nasal discharge usually starts off lightly, but it may build overnight into a really distracting and painful consistency.

If you are really lucky, I may spend only two or three days with you; or I may choose to spend as much as two weeks making you throughly miserable. And I have a dangerous Ace up my sleeve. If left to my own devices, I may turn into far more serious complications.

One interesting thing about me is that I have defied medical science in its efforts to find out how, and why, I can get into your system at all. There is general agreement that if body resistance is low, I can make my entry more easily, and hang around to make you uncomfortable longer. And, of course, I can lead to serious complications without any effort.

I get a big kick out of some of those televisions commercials with all their gimmicks for curing colds. Most of them don't mean a thing to me. They just upset the normal functions of your body and make my work easier, if I'm planning complications. That's my big bag!

I have one serious enemy - the Doctor of Chiropractic. Here is why. The way you feel, whether good or bad - and whether you have high or low resistance to aliments like me - depends largely on the condition of your nerve energy supply. The Doctor of Chiropractic knows, from many years of college training and experience in practice, that a strong body can resist infections that over come weaker systems.

If you are susceptible to me, Carl the Cold, or to other allied and related conditions, you can be helped by a visit to your Chiropractor.

This nerve energy I am talking about originates in the brain, and is distributed to your body through a vast network of nerves that exit from the brain and travel down the freeway system of the vertebrae in the spinal column. It doesn't take much to cause a detour. A slight jolt or jar can move a vertebra enough to cause pressure and irritation to nerves; this interferes with the normal transmission of vital life-giving nerve energy.

The chiropractor will realign any wayward vertebrae by gently adjusting them into their natural positions. Then the healing powers of your body can take over. I, Carl the Cold, don't like this situation one bit. It's usually for a quick exit.

I do know one thing. A visit to your Chiropractor will mean a lot fewer visits from me. If you don't like colds and I'm not the most popular guy in town, even though I do get around a lot - call your Chiropractor today for an appointment. Chiropractic adjustments will get healing nature back to work for you.
