headacheHEADACHES

I'm Harvey the Headache. Sometimes I feel like a six-foot rabbit when I hit you full force. Other times I'm an elusive Here Today, Gone Tomorrow type. I probably annoy more people daily than any other ailment. When I've got them popping pills, I usually go away - for a brief time.  I let the pills lull them into false health security.

In reality, I'm a pretty dangerous fellow. Because so many people have me so often, and because I go into hiding so easily, they tend to ignore me. Actually, I'm not a disease myself. But I am one of the most potent warning signals that the human body has. Isn't it strange that millions of people ignore me daily when I'm virtually shouting "Trouble" in their ears?

I am nature's way of telling you that something is wrong. There may be an easy, simple explanation. You may have eaten too much, drunk too much, been irregular in your habits. These things often can be corrected by return to normal, desirable habits.

Persistent headaches - and sometimes I'm so persistent that you almost take me for granted -are most invariably warnings of such things as kidney trouble, heart trouble, digestive disorders, or high blood pressure.

If I am a frequent visitor in your system, you had better pay an immediate visit to your chiropractor. He or she will usually ask you to describe the exact location of your headache. This is a valuable indication to them (though not always conclusive proof) as to the source of the disorder. Is it dull, heavy pain involving the whole head? Is it a neuralgic pain - sharp and shooting? Perhaps the pain seems like eye strain. Then it will likely be centered in the eyeball and in the area of the visual center at the back of the head. Pain from high blood pressure will probably be either in the front or the top of the head.

But I can be an elusive pain. Your Doctor of Chiropractic knows that. He or she will proceed with a thorough examination of your spine, because it is there that they can usually determine the basic cause of your existing physical disorder. Misalignment in one part of the spine may indicate a disorder of the kidney; another part may indicate a stomach disorder. Through careful scientific examination, your Chiropractor can determine what organs are involved in your disorder.

All nerves follow orderly, systematic paths. Your Chiropractor has spent years in college to learn those exact paths, enabling them to pinpoint your troubles. They will make the necessary gentle adjustments, and let nature begin its healing processes.

I guess that I have more fun than just about any ailments you can have. I can make you writhe in pain. Then, when you pop a pill to scare me away, I'll go away for the time being. But the cause will still be there. That's my real fun. Because you think you've eliminated me, I go right on with the real damage that I am doing in some other part of your body.

Don't say I didn't warn you. I'm nature's best warning system. I've never been able to figure out why people don't believe in me. I'm already costing them a billion dollars a years in pain pills, and I will go along with inflation, too!

If you really want to be smart, you won't let me fool you for very long. If you get to your chiropractor when I first visit you, he can probably trace the trouble and start the corrections necessary to get nature's healing processes to work at once. If you wait too long, delaying the inevitable, the damage could be severe and your recovery delayed.
