CHIROPRACTORS ARE MORE THAN BONE DOCTORS; THEY ARE NERVE SPECIALISTS

If you were asked, "What is a chiropractor?" Your first reply might as well be that a chiropractor is a doctor who "does something" to a patient's bones (maybe the muscles, too)- probably in the spinal area. To a degree, you would be correct. Yet it is important that one understand the relationship between the bones of the skeletal system in general, and the spine in particular, and the nerves which are contained within this spinal column and the other joints.

YOUR SPINE- " THE AVENUE OF APPROACH"

Every science of healing has what is known as an "avenue of approach." In the field of medicine, a hypodermic needle injects drugs through the skin; a pill is swallowed and goes into the stomach. There need not be anything wrong with either the skin or the stomach. They are merely the "avenues" through which the drugs gain access to the body.

In the field of chiropractic, the "avenue of approach" is primarily the spine, for this is the framework which houses and protects the spinal cord, the "switchboard" of the nervous system. From the brain, nerves pass down the spinal cord and out to different parts of the body. The nerves leave the spinal cord through openings between the spinal bones, or vertebrae (pronounced ver-te-bray).

When these vertebrae get out of alignment, interference* with the normal activity of the nerves can result. Since science has proven that every function of the entire body is under the control of the nervous system, this interference can disturb normal function throughout the body wherever these nerves are routed, and cause many conditions, suffering, and pain. In fact, pain can never be experienced without some nerves being involved.

NERVE IMPULSES CONTROL EVERY PART OF YOU

Every organ, tissue, and cell is controlled by nerve impulses traveling from the brain to the various parts of the body. Nerves make all movement possible.

  • Nerves transmit sensations to the brain.
  • Nerves make possible all sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing.
  • Nerves maintain your balance and regulate your body temperature at 98.6 degrees.
  • Nerves make it possible for you to swallow.
  • Nerves control your heart, liver, lungs, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder, kidneys, stomach, male or female organs, skin, muscles, ligaments, etc.

The nervous system is the master system which controls all other systems of your body, including the glandular, reproductive, digestive, eliminative, respiratory, and circulatory systems.

Yes, nerves control, directly or indirectly, every organ and function of your entire body.

You can easily see, therefore, that complete, perfect, natural health comes only when you have a complete, natural, normally- functioning nervous system. Should even one of the vertebrae, with its associated discs, be in an abnormal position, the nerve trunk can become irritated. Minor stresses or strains, as well as major jolts or falls, can cause this irritation.

CHIROPRACTIC FINDS AND CORRECTS THE CAUSE OF HEALTH PROBLEMS

Through careful, scientific examination and evaluation, your Chiropractic doctor can determine which vertebrae and discs are affecting the nerve supply to the organs in many types of disorders. Misalignment (subluxation) in one part of the spine may induce a disorder of the kidney; in another it may relate to a stomach disorder; while in yet other areas subluxation may affect  heart function, or perhaps lungs, skin, gall bladder, or liver function. The musculoskeletal system is often affected, causing pain and diminished use of one, or both of the shoulders, arms, hips, legs or feet.

After determining which areas of your spine are misaligned, your chiropractor may then gently adjust the vertebrae to correct these subluxations- the UNDERLYING CAUSES of the problem, thus enabling the free, full flow of nerve supply to return to the affected areas. In effect, your doctor realigns the vertebrae and discs, thereby releasing and freeing the irritated- or pinched nerves so they can return to doing the normal duties that nature intended them to perform.

CHIROPRACTORS WORK WITH THE NERVES

So, you see, your chiropractor works both directly and indirectly with the nerves and is therefore, not just a "bone doctor," but a nerve specialist.

The spinal cord may be compared to the superhighway which carries traffic smoothly and in a orderly manner, provided nothing prevents this traffic flow, But should an accident (jolt, fall, stress, strain,) occur, this smooth flow of traffic is interrupted and problems may result. In severe cases, it would be comparable to bridge's being out on this superhighway (the spinal cord), preventing the traffic from reaching its destination on down the road. You can see how the only remedy for this traffic jam is to correct the cause- repair the bridge. Superficial repairs (i.e., deadening the pain with pills) at the end of the road, do nothing to correct the PRIMARY CAUSE of trouble.

Thus, your chiropractor deals with the CAUSE of any health problem, knowing that the EFFECT naturally disappears as a result. Removing the subluxation in you spine allows the inherent healing power of your body to mend and heal your body naturally, so that it can regain the normal healthy condition nature intended it to have.

Your Doctor of Chiropractic medicine, has spent about six years in college, additional time in graduate study, and any number of years in practice helping people regain their normal health, naturally, without dangerous drugs or unnecessary surgery. All this training and experience means your doctor is an authority on the nervous system and how it relates to its spinal "home." So, although your chiropractor appears to be working primarily with the bones of your spine and skeletal system, your doctor knows this is merely an "avenue of approach" to freeing the nerves, so they may perform the natural work for which they were originally intended. In the correct sense, then, chiropractors are more than "bone doctors." They are NERVE SPECIALISTS.

If you have any health problems, make an appointment to let your doctor of chiropractic make a careful, professional examination to determine if yours is a case for chiropractic treatment, to see if nerves are pinched or irritated in your spine, or elsewhere in your body. This may well be the best move you will ever take. For the sake of your NERVES and, therefore, your TOTAL NATURAL HEALTH!
