SPINAL CURVATURE
I'm Curtis the Spinal Curvature, and i'm crooked! I'm a slow worker, but I usually wind up making you feel bad and making you look bad - and if I'm left uncorrected, I can create serious health problems for you. I am especially good at making you hurt in you shoulders, arms and legs.
I'll make you look bad because your posture will be bad. You have an equal number of ligaments and muscles attached to each side of your spine, and radiating out in opposite directions. Normally these muscles contract or relax with an equally balanced force, and everything is fine.
But sometimes somethings go wrong and there is an unequal pull. Then you won't sit, stand or walk as straight as you should because Curtis the Spinal Curvature sneaks in. At first I may simply be a slight abnormality, causing discomfort and noticeably bad posture. But left to my own devices, I can develop into a chronic condition. Then I produce some degree of skeletal abnormality such as postural imbalance, a tilted or protruding hip, a dropped shoulder, a shortened leg, or a slighted twisted neck.
How do I get my foothold - or should I say my posture hold?
Most frequently it is in this manner. Those muscles and ligaments I told you about are regulated by nerve energy, just as are all the other muscles and the organs in your body. This nerve energy is a message sent out from the brain. The main highway for the nerve system is down the spinal column and out between vertebrae to the proper branch highways. When there is interference to the normal nerve supply to muscles on one side of the back, there will be either too much or too little energy going to those muscles. They will not be in the perfect balance with the muscles opposite them.
Then I can do my dirty work. Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for you, there is help available from your doctor of Chiropractic. Years of College and training have qualified him or her to check your spinal column for misalignments. He or she does this with a combination of skilled hands and the most scientifically modern methods available.
Then when he or she has discovered where the misalignment is located, he or she is able, with gentle adjustments, to restore vertebrae to their normal positions and let nature begin its wondrous healing process.
A great thing from my standpoint, but a thing I have never been able to understand, is that many people will live with this condition for years before consulting their Doctor of Chiropractic. Of course, this makes it more difficult for him or her to make the necessary adjustments and restore normalcy.
In the case of children - and I am no respecter of age - the chance for a speedy correction are generally quite good. Young bones are more flexible than those of an adult. But leave me to do my dirty work for a few years and there is big trouble. That is why it is most important that you take your child to the Doctor of Chiropractic at the first suggestion of a spinal curvature problem.
I'm really not a happy boarder. I don't even like myself, especially when I ruin the lives of children.
