Sheep shearing tips

Shearing sheep is enjoyable – but sometimes, it gets tough. Professional shearers also face trouble keeping up with the physically exhausting process. Over the years, many shearing experts perfected the shearing process and shared the best tips at the same time.

So, the first thing you need is skills. During the peak, shearing contractors have many tasks to tend at the same time. While you have to maintain a balance between shearing and other tasks, you must think of ways to make sure one thing – how not to let shearing take a toll on your body and personal life.

In order to ease the overall process, here are a few tips you should not miss out on. Let’s check them out!

Keep Your Flock Dry before Shearing

Gather your sheep and keep them in the pen so that rain or water does not get to them. If they roam around far pastures, it is quite difficult to collect them all at once. Use a lead rope to walk pets right into the pen.

Heat Stress is an Issue

When you see your sheep hanging out their tongues, it is a sign of heat stress. You should postpone shearing if this condition continues. Extreme heatwave leaves adverse effects on the flock, so you need to keep them hydrated quickly after shearing.

Monitoring and maintaining the work environment and facilities

The work environment should be maintained so that it is in a clean and safe condition. Damaged or broken equipment, fittings, and fixtures along with shearing machines, air conditioning, plumbing, and lighting should be repaired quickly. Facilities should be safe, clean, accessible, and in good working order. Consumable items like soap and toilet paper, should be replenished on a regular basis.

The workplace, as well as facilities, should be cleaned regularly. The cleaning schedule of facilities like toilets, hand basins, showers, and dining areas should take into account the nature of work, the likelihood of contamination, and the number of workers using them.
