LEO LUMBAGO
I'm Leo Lumbago, and if you are more than 40 years old, I may have already been around several times to cause you severe muscular pain on the lower part of your back. If this is the case, the chances are good that I will be back to plague you with distressing frequency - unless you do something about me.
Technically, I am a severe muscular contraction of one of the large muscles in the lower back. Usually, however, my name is applied to all forms of severe pain in the lower back. But I don't mind taking the extra credit.
The trunk of your body is strengthened above the waist by your ribs, which are attached to the spine and help maintain the body in an upright position. The large hip bones provide support below the waist. In the immediate region of the waist, the entire support is provided by the spinal segments (vertebrae) and the ligaments and muscles which hold then in their normal positions.
Although this comparatively small column of bones supports the entire upper part of the body, it is the most flexible of the whole trunk. When you twist your body from side to side, it pivots on these spinal segments. The vertebrae flex as you bend forward and backward.
Powerful muscles capable of withstanding great stress, are needed to support these vertebrae. Both ligaments and muscles, must be perfectly balanced on each side of the spine.
It should come as no surprise to you, then, that the vertebrae in this area can often be thrown out of perfect alignment. This occurs frequently with extreme muscular exertion, or long continued strain. When one or more of the lower spinal vertebrae are displaced, there is a change in the size of the small openings through which the delicate nerves make their exit.
Exit proper nerve energy - enter me, Leo Lumbago.
The well-being of every muscle in the body depends on the proper supply of vital energy through the nerves. If that supply is abnormal, the muscles which the nerves reach cannot function normally.
You are equipped with an intricate and highly-organized nervous system. You "order" your fingers to move. The message is carried from your brain, down your spine by your nerves - and your fingers move. All this in a split second! If the nerves supplying the message to the fingers were severed or paralyzed, you could not move your fingers, no matter how strongly you willed it.
The same is true of the muscles of the lower back. They respond to energy sent to them by their nerves. Even when they appear relaxed, they have some degree of muscular contraction. This is called tone.
Leo Lumbago does not like good tone. So whenever I can, I try to push some vertebral segments around. If I can get them out of alignment, I can visit with you for a long time. (If I stay around long enough, I can lead to curvature of the spine.)
I'm not too particular. The condition can be either acute, or chronic, causing either abnormal muscular contraction or flabbiness. Either way, you have a back ache. But for it to be properly called Lumbago, the muscles in the lower region of the spine must be in an excessive state of contraction.
Your Chiropractor is trained to determine exactly which segment or segments are out of line. He is further trained by years of college education to restore the vertebrae to their proper position by skillful, gentle adjustment. With the pressure on the nerves relieved, I normally do a quick fade-out. (if you let me stay around quite a while before seeing your chiropractor, it will take longer to get rid of me.)
Chiropractic is the only logical method for treating me - Leo Lumbago. When your chiropractor starts to correct the reasons I got there in there first place, the greatest of all healers take over - the natural curative powers which are within every human body. Nature and I never could get along. I leave.
