Shearquantity has recently conducted a survey to find out how the current shearing workplace looks like. Some of the answers are alarming, and the result hints at the growing number of drug or alcohol abuse in the field of work.

According to the survey response, a few employees are sometimes found working under the influence of methamphetamine. Sometimes they are hungover when working and they end up being careless. Various factors influence such risky behaviours among the employees,

  • Poorly designed facilities
  • Working when overtired
  • Handling of heavy animals
  • Improper sanitary system
  • Factors out of their control

Respondents also acknowledge that many of the hazards require immediate action. As these problems are growing, employers and contractors can take action. So, let’s take a look below.

Inform, Educate and Train

For an alcohol and drug-free work environment, a training program is essential.

  • Explain the policy on prohibition of alcohol and drug uses
  • Find a way to deal with employees who have been using for a long-term
  • Negative effects on alcohol and drugs on work performance
  • Provide treatment, counselling and rehabilitation if necessary

Bring a Change to Fasting Policy

Workers most often suffer due to the short fasting times for animals over 100kg. When the sheep fast for a long period, they do not struggle. This eliminates the risk of back injuries.

So, the workers are at risk when they work with full sheep. If the contractors can change the existing policy, this can prevent workers from engaging in risky behaviours.

There are things that need attention, and a safe workplace can eradicate drug and alcohol related problems. To learn more about enabling workplace safety, stay tuned to our blog!
